The last few decades have seen a profusion of cement and breeze-block building pervading Morocco’s hinterland. It’s true that building with adobe and rammed earth, as was the case for centuries, requires constant maintenance and upkeep, gradually incompatible with more modern ways of living. Despite all that, villages like this one, tucked away in the High Atlas, a couple of hours drive from Skoura and Ouarzazate, prove that the vernacular survives. From here, spectacular trekking routes can unwind, to end up on the other side of the Atlas, in the Valley of Roses or connect with the lush plateaus of Ait Bouguemez.
